Definitions
The Center
The University of Michigan Center for Proteome Studies is charged with the research, development, and
implementation of new post-genome technologies. The
Center concentrates on technologies which take as a starting point the DNA sequence data in the genome
databases and link these data to the functionality of the gene products in the context of the living cell. These
are integrative technologies that take advantage of the information obtained from the extreme (and successful)
reductionism of the genome projects and address complex systems ranging from protein complexes to living
cells. The Center's activities, both research and applications, are integrative in approach by necessity.
The research component of the Center integrates new methodologies in chemistry, physics, biology, and
information science to develop new technologies for studying complex systems. A bioinformatics core is a
central component of the projects undertaken by the Center. This integration of technologies is also reflected
in the interactions of the Center with groups on the University of Michigan campus. The Center interacts with
other centers at the University of Michigan as they develop in the areas of functional genomics and bioinformatics.
The Proteome Center consists of the following groups:
- an administrative component, consisting of a Director and an administrative assistant,
- a bioinformatics component minimally consisting of a Ph. D. level scientist with bioinformatics expertise, a network administrator, and one research programmer,
- a mass spectrometry laboratory, consisting of a Ph. D. level mass spectrometrist, 2 analytical mass spectrometrists, and a senior technician with instrument development skills,
- a microseparations core for capillary and 2-D gel electrophoresis technologies, consisting of a Ph. D. level researcher with experience in separations science, and a senior technician,
- an experienced engineer to contribute to instrument design and act as liaison with researchers in the School of Engineering.
More detail about these groups can be found on the personnel page.
The Center along with its industrial partners sponsors a biannual post-genome studies
conference. Seminars and conferences sponsored by the center act to bring together scientists working to further technologies
in functional genomics. Details about sponsored seminars can be found on the news page.
In addition to seminars and conferences, the Center sponsors, along with corporate partners, a post-doctoral training
program. The program is specifically designed to provide fellows with the skills needed for proteome research in industry. The
fellows participate in technology development or demonstration projects in collaborative effort with
researchers from the University of Michigan and/or the Center's industrial partners. The fellowship is for two years and provides
the fellows an opportunity to work on a number of different projects developing a broad
range of skills. The post-doctoral program is an essential component of the Proteome Center that encourages participation
of investigators from the University research community. It also helps ensure the Center remains focused on solving real
research problems of interest to both academic and industrial investigators.
